Earth Day Is Every Day

Earth Day Is Every Day

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection and this year’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet”.

At Spectrum, this is very close to our heart as we're always striving to become a more sustainable brand.

Our ‘attainable sustainable’ aim means we work hard to support the environment, while making sure our products maintain the high quality our community and customers love.

The Aspinall Foundation

As part of our mission to be kind to the planet, we love supporting our charity partner through fundraising efforts and donations, to ensure the foundation continues its vital conservation work. The Aspinall Foundation is a UK-based charity that specialises in saving and protecting endangered species, as well as rescuing animals in desperate need from around the world.

The Aspinall Foundation protects areas of wilderness all over the world including an area in central Africa the size of Kent, pristine rainforest habitat in Madagascar and multiple areas in Indonesia. These precious habitats are highly biodiverse and home to countless rare and endangered species. With your help, The Aspinall Foundation can continue their vital conservation work. It’s too late to rewind but together we can rewild.

In Spring 2022, the team at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, waved goodbye to a beloved pair of boisterous lion cubs, Azi and Zazu. The brothers, 16-month-old Azi and 11-month-old Zazu, travelled from the park in early May 2022 to the dramatic bushveld landscapes of South Africa. Azi and Zazu were born at Port Lympne Reserve in Kent but were both sadly rejected by the pride in infancy and were transferred to Howletts to be hand-raised by the dedicated Howletts team.

The Aspinall Foundation worked closely with the team at Howletts and their overseas partners to find Azi and Zazu a wild, new home. Their destination was a specialist sanctuary run by Love Lions Alive in Free State province. They are now roaming an area ten times the size of their former enclosure and have settled into their new surroundings fantastically; running, stalking and playing as all lions should, in their ancestral homelands. The lions are now thriving in their new environment and feeding enthusiastically, with their favourite meal being a full venison carcass.

As they settle into life in Africa on the golden plains of Free State Province, the Love Lions Alive and Aspinall Foundation teams are preparing a larger area for them.

Conservation history was made in 2021 with the first ever birth to captive-born gorillas in the wild, part of the Aspinall Foundation's ground-breaking gorilla reintroduction project in the Batéké Plateau National Park, Gabon. The baby western lowland gorilla, Taáli, was born to mother Mayombe and father Djongo. Djongo was born at Port Lympne Reserve in Kent before returning to the wild in Gabon in 2013.

He travelled from the UK with his father Djala, a wild-born orphan who lost his family to poachers and endured mental and physical abuse at the hands of the people who took him. He was rescued by The Aspinall Foundation in 1986. Mother Mayombe was born at ZooParc de Beauval in Saint-Aignan, France, and repatriated to Gabon in 2019 through a collaboration between The Aspinall Foundation and Beauval.

Kent-born cheetah, Nairo, was rewilded from Howletts Wild Animal Park to South Africa in February 2020. In November 2021, Nairo sired four adorable wild-born cubs, who are thriving under the endless skies of South Africa’s Great Karoo. Not only was this wonderful news for The Aspinall Foundation, but it was also vitally important for the entire cheetah species.

One of the primary goals of The Aspinall Foundation’s rewilding projects is to increase much-needed genetic diversity in wild populations, so the birth of this litter is a huge win.
